Learning
about the Convention and Developing Rights and Responsibilities
If
you see this symbol, it
means that the Ethos Network can provide an 'Outline' paper
which gives more information on the work of the groups described
below. Outline papers offer the opportunity to schools and
others participating in Network events to describe and share
good practice. |

Guiding
Principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the
Child
The
Convention on the Rights of the Child outlines the
human rights to be respected and protected for every
child under the age of 18. The Convention incorporates
the full range of human rights - civil and political
rights as well as economic, social and cultural rights
- of all children. The underlying values or 'guiding
principles' of the Convention guide the way each right
is fulfilled and respected and serve as a point of
reference for the implementation and monitoring of
children's rights. The four guiding principles are
highlighted around the sides of this text.

Funky
Blue Smurfs,
Glencryan School,
North Lanarkshire
The Funky Blue Smurfs aims to develop advocacy for children
with disabilities. The project is a multi-agency partnership
involving education and social work departments and
the organisation Partners in Play. Some of their successes
have been seeing the young people develop their skills
in the group, their growing awareness of issues and
their ability to speak out.

In the context of the UN Convention and with specific
reference to children's environmental rights and responsibilities,

The
School Council and Policy Making
St Elizabeth's Primary
South Lanarkshire
The school's active pupil council has developed a pupil
friendly Rights and Responsibilities Code based on the
UN Convention. The Council is active in areas such as
school meals and discipline policy. A detention policy,
formulated by the Council has reduced indiscipline-children
do not like being 'reprimanded' by their peers.

An
Active Pupil Council
St Modan's High
Stirling
St Modan's has active pupil councils which have developed
a high level of pupil participation. Using St Modan's
HMI report as a basis for their evaluation, pupils have
produced their own standards and quality report. The
report is produced in glossy format and assesses the
strengths of the school from the pupils' point of view.
Future school plans include involving pupils in the
appointments procedure and in consultation on Public
Private Partnership proposals.

Rights
and Responsibilities- learning through drama
Bellsquarry Primary
West Lothian
Drama has a high profile in the school and is
used to learn about and explore many issues including
rights and responsibilities. Older pupils had
an opportunity to entertain delegates at the Ethos
Network conference with their version of 'Big
Brother' and 'Who wants to be a millionaire?'
(photograph below) which demonstrated their understanding
of balancing rights and responsibilities.
