Educational
Institute of Scotland
The EIS presented a workshop at the 2002 Ethos Network
Conference on teachers' rights and responsibilities.
While there is no specific statement of teachers' rights,
national agreements on pay and conditions of service
have established contractual rights for Scottish teachers.
Along with other teaching unions, the EIS are active
in areas such as, developing a more participative management
style in schools, social inclusion and in consultation
following the Discipline Task Group report. They are
also addressing the question of whether targets to reduce
exclusions and increase inclusion are producing greater
stresses on teachers and young people.

Save
the Children
Works in the education sector to secure children's right
to a quality and relevant education. The organisation
works with schools, local authorities and national agencies
to develop policy and practice in the areas of citizenship
education and participation, enabling children and young
people to learn key skills of citizenship and to take
part fully in the life of their school and community.
An in-service training package is provided for teachers
through local authorities. The aim of the training is
to support teachers to promote a rights-based ethos
in schools and to promote pupils' on-going involvement
in decision making about their education and their school.
In partnership with Stirling University Institute of
Education, Save the Children Scotland are carrying out
research in a primary school which promotes children's
rights and pupil involvement in decision-making. The
research aims to explore the impact this rights-based
ethos has on pupils' understanding of rights, pupils'
performance and achievements, relationships in the school,
behaviour and discipline.
