Vision
and Action was a series of publications which ran alongside
the case studies. This series documented the way in which
a school rose to a particular challenge.
One
of the makers of a school with a positive ethos is the way
it can rise to a specific challenge, sometimes quickly and
successfully, but often with greater difficulty - involving
a whole process of learning and planning to cope effectively.
Circumstances include when a school is facing closure or two
schools merge, when an intake of pupils whose needs differ
from those previously experienced (for example, a new special
unit is formed, or a group of travellers or refugees arrive
in the catchment area). Other examples might be the school
facing major alterations to buildings or being rehoused, coping
with staff changes or illness/bereavement in pupils or staff.
The
Vision and Action series recorded how a school responded to
such a challenge, the highs and lows, what helped (or did
not), the lessons learned and contacts made, which might be
useful to another school in a similar position. We were particularly
interested to know what part the whole school ethos played
in the response.
